I’m extremely proud to be the author of two powerful works that celebrate identity, representation, and the beauty of storytelling through dance. Explore each below.

The Color of Dance
(Released 2023)

A decade in the making…
I'm proud to share The Color of Dance, a new coffee table book born from 10 years of documenting the Brown Girls Do Ballet® photo project.

Featuring striking images and powerful quotes from dancers I've met along the way, this book challenges long-held ideas about who belongs in ballet. The Color of Dance celebrates resilience, beauty, and the joy of taking up space.

Brown Girls Do Ballet
(Released 2024)

My first children’s book is full of gorgeous photographs of irresistible young BIPOC ballerinas of all levels, from beginners to more experienced dancers. Writer JaNay Brown-Wood's poetic text, inspired by the dancer's graceful poses and powerful leaps, encourages young readers be proud of who they are and empowers them to take center stage. Brown Girls Do Ballet will inspire all readers to pursue their dreams no matter what barriers are put in front of them.

For Educators: “Once a Teacher, Always a Teacher”

As a former classroom teacher, I know the power of stories to spark imagination, build empathy, and shift perspective. Brown Girls Do Ballet isn’t just a picture book, it’s a conversation starter, a mirror for students of color, and a doorway into meaningful classroom discussion about identity, perseverance, and the arts.

To support your work in the classroom, I’ve created a free downloadable lesson plan aligned with ELA and SEL standards. Whether you're teaching story structure, celebrating cultural heritage, or just looking to inspire your students, this resource is for you.
